What Fatherhood Means To Me: An Interview With Fyne Pr1nt WilliAMS

photo challenge (1).png

“Fathers, like mothers, are not born. Men grow into fathers and fathering is a very important stage in their development.” –David Gottesman

When you think of Fatherhood what comes to mind? When I think of Fatherhood as I have seen through my sessions a few things come to mind. I think of dad jokes, lessons being taught and men turning into teddy bears when kids come in for a tackle hug. I have had senior sessions with a dad in uniform photo bomb hug his daughter and a Father son music inspired session with guitars & a piano. I have had some epic dad portraits over the years!

A few weeks ago, I was listening to Tunes 92.5/104.5 and they had a rapper on named Fyne Pr1nt WiliAMS. He was sharing music and his story. He talked about the power of positivity and creating music with his son. He talked about his work in the community creating a song for a local non profit. After the interview, I checked out his Instagram and saw that he also volunteers at the local teen center.

This interview stuck in my mind for a week. I thought, wow, this dad is awesome! He’s creating music with a message and intention, he loves being a dad and he finds time to help out make the community better. At the end of the week, I messaged Fyne Pr1nt and thanked him for his positivity and shared the impact of the interview and I invited him for a Father & Son photo session as my gift. I wanted to create beautiful portraits with Fyne Pr1nt and his son to capture that bond with my lens and also turn up the volume on his message!

The photo session awesome! You’ll see the photos from the session throughout this blog post. But I didn’t want to just share the photos. I asked Fyne Pr1nt a few interview questions to help share his message and let the community know about his talent and his share his perspective on fatherhood.

Can you share your music journey, what inspired you to start and how has your music evolved over time?

I'm the fifth child, only boy, and the youngest raised single handedly by my mother, Janet. I have four older sisters. The eldest, Stephanie, back then was a tomboy who took on the role of big brother for me. She knew all the cool things going on in our culture and I just followed her footsteps. Stephanie would write songs and point out parts for me to sing. I was about 10 years old when she decided we'd be rappers instead. It was her idea that transformed into my dream.

My style of music has grown with me and has always been a reflection of my lifestyle. I went from making stereotypical rap music to being a sober father who makes clean, message based HipHop. My music is all about us taking accountability and becoming our best selves so we can be better for those around us.

What inspired your

"Give Taller" Motto?

The Golden rule is "Do unto others as you would like done unto you."
I believe you can't go wrong with that.
Give what you would like to have.
I asked myself what people want the most and created a way to make it stick.
Give Time, Attention, Love, Loyalty, Effort, and Respect.
Give TALLER!

How much of an impact has being a father had on that motto?

Every time I look at my son I see the little me. I have to lead by example. He's paying very close attention to my footsteps, so my path is super important. Showing him how to treat others is mandatory. We have to add to the positivity in life. The negativity will always have greater numbers, but we have stronger soldiers on the positive side of life's battlefield.

What advice can you share with fellow dad's this Father's Day?

Fatherhood is the best hood to live in. lol. But seriously.. Please give your children your time and attention. It's not how much of your time you give, it's what you do with the time you give. Some of us have more free time than others, so if you only have 1 or 2 undisturbed hours a day please make them the most attentive hours you can. Talk with your children, listen to your child's thoughts, go into their world, and find out who they are so you can assist who they're becoming in a beautiful way. Teach them everything you wish you knew at their age so they can have an advantage. This makes you human and relatable. It helps them know that you've been in their shoes before and that you weren't perfect. They'll still make mistakes, but they'll know how to grow from them.

Best piece of dad advice for young kids/teens

I tell my son to never judge others based off of appearance and behavior. There is a reason and in a lot of cases a painful history responsible for how they are today. Trauma is real. Neglect is real. Everyone doesn't get to experience being loved, but they know how to hurt because they're hurting inside. Express your feelings, and don't hold pain inside. You're worth being heard.
